Grant Overview
The Digital Divide in Maryland
Maryland is home to significant disparities in digital literacy and access to technology, particularly among low-income residents. As of 2021, the Maryland Center for Health Equity reported that nearly 25% of low-income households lack reliable internet access. In an increasingly digital world, this gap can hinder individuals’ employment opportunities and limit their access to essential services.
Who is Eligible for the Digital Literacy Enhancement Program
The Digital Literacy Enhancement Program aims to equip low-income residents of Maryland with the essential tech skills needed to thrive in today’s digital environment. Eligible candidates include community organizations, workforce development centers, and educational institutions that serve economically disadvantaged populations.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a strong understanding of the barriers faced by low-income residents and outline a structured program that utilizes reality capture technology for interactive training. Documentation of past experiences in delivering digital literacy programs will also be a requirement.
Target Outcomes for Enhancing Digital Literacy in Maryland
This initiative focuses on increasing digital literacy rates among Maryland’s underresourced populations, ultimately improving employment readiness and access to critical services. By providing interactive training that incorporates advanced technology, the program aims to empower participants with skills that foster economic mobility and resilience.
Implementing this initiative will be vital for addressing Maryland's digital divide. As residents become more proficient in technology, it will open up new opportunities for employment, community engagement, and education. By strategically focusing on digital skill enhancement, Maryland can work towards a more equitable and inclusive economy, overall benefitting the state’s progress and competitiveness in the digital age.
